Science behind PooPongal / Poo Nonbu

The untold science behind the Thamizh month of romance - my view from the continuing anthropology, culture and tradition:
B4 knowing the Tamil month of celebration and romance you ppl should know few basic things for a better understanding... Margazhi is the month where kanni pongal (virgins / unmarried girls) use to draw kolam in the house entrance with powdered rice and these girls use to make pillaiyar out of cow dung in odd numbers and will place it in the kolam... Throughout the month the kolam becomes bigger and bigger and the pillaiyar count too will increase from 1 to 3 in the 2nd day, to 5 in the 3rd and will end up with 59 pillaiyars at the end of margazhi... After this the Thai month begins. By the 1st of Thai is known as Thai pongal, Maattu pongal being the 2nd and PooPpongal / "kanni" / Kaanum pongal being the 3rd day...
By Thai pongal ie the 1st day, the rice to make pongal, sugarcane, banana will be coming from maternal uncle's home and the celebration begins with praising the Sun god.
By the 2nd day, during Maattu pongal, Patti festival will be celebrated and also the most celebrated "Jallikattu" will happen by this day only... The kanni girls will be witnessing the heroes who bully the bulls and will start to melt from inside... In western Tamilnadu ie the Kongadesam, Rekla race / bull racing will happen in the same day which will be witnessed by the whole village including the girls... Rekhla is also used for the Kannis to decide their match during Swayamvara too as showed in Rajini's Ejamaan film...
By the third day, during poo Pongal the kanni girls will be dissolving all the pillaiyars they made the previous month in the nearby river or lake... By this same day, unmarried girls will be receiving and wearing up the new jewellery and dress which will be coming from their maternal uncle's (Thaai Maaman) house... By this day the families will get together and will make space for their guys and girls to socialise in many ways... This is the only day that the girls are sent out of houses without any brotherly or fatherly male members accompanying them... By this time while she dissolves the pillaiyars in the river, the young guys especially the cousins were made to accompany them... Girls by this day will be applying Manjal on their face and foot by this day... Even if they were kids they are made to go to the sliding rock nearby to play sliding games bonding with one another... These pairs were provided with food from the parents which is called as kootanjoru, which should the guys should feed their cousin girl and vice versa... The girl will be made to swing in thoori made by the guy from knotting the branches in the banyan tree nearby... There are lot many games arranged to make the cousins socialise... Uriyadi nonbu (உறியடி நோன்பு) is a game famous in western Tamilnadu where cracking the pot filled with manjal water tied high, with eyes tied with a cloth being one of them... The cousin is the one who should turn the person with tied eyes to confuse the direction... This is the day where sangam literature agananooru speaks of the koodal / making love will happen... Yes the next day after guys expressed their bravery it happened and no wonder that why all the sangam texts speak about thalaivan and thalaivi from all the 5 thinais (agri, pastoral, hilly, shory) made love in hill tract, ie in kurinji thinai... Yes once (3 millennium back) they were sent to hilly river origins to dissolve pillaiyar and later it evolved to nearby river and lakes... Later on the love making got stopped (around 700 BCE) when pillaiyar is being dissolved in river tracts but instead "feeling the love" started...
Yes... This 3rd day is the day where girls were made to dance kummi (கும்மியடி), pluck all the flowers from the garden, offer it to the god in the temple, along with mulaipari carrying in the head... Bcoz of offering poo to god this is also called as pooPongal / poo nombu in Kongadesam... another name of this day is kanni pongal... At this day as said earlier they will be wearing the new dress from thaai maaman's house... By this day while seeing the murai ponnu / payyan the day after these girls saw their bravery through Rekla and Jallikattu (2nd day), playing games like Uriyadi with them on the 3rd day they will surely fall in love... That's the speciality of this romancing day...
For knowing how this romantic day works out, we have to know how the tradition is sculpted by our forefathers to prepare for this day :) Let go back a little now... After the Tamil month "Karthigai" comes the "Margazhi" and then the "Thai"... During Karthigai...
During & starting from Karthigai month the guys are made to fast mentally and physically in such a way that they will not be leaking their emotions... Fasting for Sabarimala, thiruvannamalai being one of them... Also karthigai dheepam will be celebrated by lighting all the houses and temples, getting up early to draw kolam b4 sun rises and arranging the dheepams all over the house in the evening times... Irrespective of the biting cold climate during that Karthigai month (nov-dec) these works will make girls and women tired at the night and so they will easily get to sleep immediately after they fall into their bed... After all, the karthigai month is not fully designed by our forefathers to fast alone... marriages can happen this month but most Jyothishars (josiyar) will not recommend this month...
Next comes the severe fasting month, the Margazhi... During this month (dec-jan) the marriages are completely forbidden, all are made to fast, making love is not okay besides this is the most coldest month of the year... During this month the sabarimala season gets to the peak and this is however a modern trend... But in olden days everyone will be made to get up early and made to bath in cold water, made to fast... Girls as we saw earlier will be bending down stretching their backbone much and will be busy in drawing kolams and making pillaiyar b4 the sun rises... Also by this month of Margazhi the girls will be receiving abnormal ozone intake as it will low in altitude during this month... So due to this heavy work girls will be sleeping well without any distraction during nights and guys will be fasting for temples without leaking their emotions... Even the puranams and many sources say that Lord krishna is being the month of Margazhi ... "I'm being Margazhi in the months"... The Adisaiva tradition which is the predominant one of Cholas says that the Margazhi is the brahmamuhurtam of the Devars and each saivaite should fast...
So when this month end up and when Thai month begins, they will be busy in celebrating without being distracted for the idea of making love until the 2nd day... During the second day when they get impressed by the bravery of men especially their cousins' doing rekhla and jallikattu, the girls will actually melt... Then, in the next day (3rd day) when they meet up during the family get together and play games like uriyadi and all who won't fall in love??? 2 months of controlling their emotions will be melting down rapidly even when their eyes coincide... Tholkappiyam and Iraiyanar Kalaviyal says that the couple will meet and fall in love because of their karma (ஊழ்வினை) ... Ilampooranar, the great commentator of the 11th century Chola regime has explained this in depth... It also says that the couple will have 10 poruthams too and it is also their good karma which made them to meet (at this day)... - ஒருவனும் ஒருத்தியுமாக இல்லறஞ் செய்துழி. அவ்விருவரையும் மறுபிறப்பினும் ஒன்றுவித்தலும் வேறாக்குதலுமாகிய இருவகை ஊழினும் என்றவாறு. இருவருள்ளமும் பிறப்புத் தோறும் ஒன்றி நல்வினைக்கண்ணே நிகழ்ந்த ஊழினது ஆணையின் என்றவாறு. - Ilampooranar's commentary for Tholkappiyam Porularikaram Kalaviyal Sutra 90...
This is why I name this 3rd pongal as the valentine's day of the Thamizhs... The 1st day (Thai pongal) being celebrated as Uzavar thirunaal ie for the velaalar and their 18 kudis, the 2nd day for Aayar & Maravar (the cow related ppl), and the third day for everyone to join with their cousins...
Even most marriages happen in Thai month only... In one vikram movie there is a song "Thai maasam oora koottu machane"
Also in Choladesam and Kongadesam, during the month of Aadi (6 months b4 Thai) especially by Aadipperukku only, the plantation for crops will begin as Aadi comes by June and south west monsoon starts by June 1-Sep 30... Aadiperukku is the 18th day of Aadi where the South West monsoon will make all the rivers flood... There is a proverb ஆடிப்பட்டம் தேடிவிதை, meaning that best month to sow is Aadi... By the month of Nov-Dec north west monsoon will be happenin... So by the mid of December comes the Margazhi and after a month, by the mid of January comes the harvesting season, Thai...
So usually by the start of the Thai month, farmers will be harvesting, giving a part from the income to the 18 other castes for helping them and will be flourishing... This month will be for thanking Sun god, Celebration of life, for competitive sporting, to fall in love, to marry and finally to make love...
I however feel much painful that this valentine's day (17th Jan) of the Thamizhs was made a day for the students, the youngsters to struggle instead of celebrating... However this has led to the retaliation with a ton times of propagating the youth about the awareness, overloaded... This post is also an outcome of it...
This is just an outline of the big picture behind the 3 day celebration of Thamizhars... When we go in depth regarding the ozone factor, the benefit of the position / asana from which girls draw kolam, science behind Karthigai - murugan, Margazhi - Krishna, Thingal - moon's day and its impact on water in our body during Maargazhi, Kaarthigai months, the link between chakras - six seasons of the year - solstices and equinoxes - sankrantis and lot many factors, lots and lot many information has to be poured here and that will be too heavy for a single post... All these were nothing but what I observed from the tradition and culture that my village holds, what I heard from my great grand parents and what I heard from relations right from my childhood...
